Based in Eindhoven (NL) and a frequent exhibitor on the world circuit, from Moss to Experimenta, French designer Julien Carretero explores the possibilities of artisan creation in objects that are lively, vibrant and in constant phase-change. This is hands-on design, sensual and self-made, inscribed in the sinuous lines of one-off/industrial pieces in the manner of Gaetano Pesce. What it tells us that a designer can’t be just a thinking head, since the most important thing is to put a craftsman’s feeling into the fabrication process.

Mother and child. From conception to the post-natal period, the life-giving links in feeding between this primeval pair develop in two successive stages. First, the production of a shared temporary organ, the placenta, which is like a modem that connects the two bodies for feeding purposes during the 9 months of gestation. Second, the production of mother’s milk, which extends the link after parturition in a relationship that is almost cannibal: the baby feeding on the mother, for the survival of both. Commissioned by La Cuisine to reflect on the theme of ‘eating together’, Duende collective proposes a range of objects that re-evaluates the earliest human feeding habits which are intra uterine before becoming extra uterine. Local River, home storage unit for fish and greens
The Locavores appeared in San Francisco in 2005 and define themselves as ‘a group of culinary adventurers who eat foods produced in a radius of 100 miles (160 km) around their city’. By doing so they aim to reduce impact on the environment inherent to the transport of foodstuffs, while ensuring their traceability.
Local River anticipates the growing influence of this group (the word ‘locavore’ made its first appearance in an American dictionary in 2007) by proposing a home storage unit for live freshwater fish combined with a mini vegetable patch. This DIY fish-farm-cum-kitchen-garden is based on the principle of aquaponics coupled with the exchange and interdependence of two living organisms – plants and fish. The plants extract nutrients from the nitrate-rich dejecta of the fish. In doing so they act as a natural filter that purifies the water and maintains a vital balance for the eco-system in which the fish live. Read the rest of this entry »
« BEL-AIR » a new air-filtering system using plants
The air quality indoors is worse than outdoors. Plastic used for our daily furniture production emits pollutants (benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene) whose levels are maximal during warm and humid periods.
Crucial for the health of the NASA’s astronauts, who stay in orbital station in a polymer-saturated environment, the American agency has set up an air purifying system by plants research program in the early 80’s. With « Bel-Air », this program is now completed and optimized by french designer Mathieu Lehanneur, together with the Harvard University scientist David Edwards, and ready for domestic use.
